“That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”

  1. In "Poem for My Sister" and in "In Our tenth Year", the idea that life goes quickly is developped but in different ways. In "Poem for My Sister", the speaker praises innocence by presenting adulthood as a hard step in life whereas in "In Our tenth Year", the speaker explains he is more and more mature with time and his maturity makes his love stronger.

  2. All of these poems are about an evolution through time and the speaker goes from two opposed moments of life but with a different treatment of time. In « Follower », there is a sudden jump in time expressed by a shift in ideas and tense. In « Poem for My Sister », this evolution is less clear and is implied through the characters : the little sister respresents the past and the older sister the present. In « Afternoons », the reader can notice a slower evolution from past to present highlighting the monotonous aspect of life. Then, in « In Our Tenth Year », we go from present to past and back to present.
