“That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.” F. Scott Fitzgerald

Rhyming couplets 2.1
Come up with a rhyming couplet for Demetrius to say to Helena just before leaving (see lines 241-244), summing up his opinion or feelings. Write in iambic pentameter! Feel free to comment on your classmates' rhyming couplets.
HELENA We cannot fight for love, as men may do; We should be wooed, and were not made to woo. DEMETRIUS And men fight not for love bur father's "yea", Our duty gives no choice but to obey.
I really love your couplet Maëlys! We find again the themes of patriarchal society, and love vs. reason. Demetrius is kind of rearranging the words Helena just used. Since she does that most of the time, I think it is very funny to reverse the roles. I think this couplet illustrates the bahavior of Demetrius in the adaptation we have seen. Great job!
HELENA We cannot fight for love, as men may do; We should be wooed, and were not made to woo. DEMETRIUS Through fire and through blood I see my fate; O stars! To seek one’s love and gain one’s hate.
HELENA We cannot fight for love, as men may do; We should be wooed, and were not made to woo. DEMETRIUS I am the male, hence hear : thou shalt resign. Why would I woo the one that is all mine ?
HELENA: We cannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS: We cannot fight for love as woman does They choose for us as we should deserve her Or maybe: we don't choose the one we love but endure I couldn't choose so I put both
HELENA: We cannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS: But I woo, only not the one thou're yearning Pray tell, how shall I change my heart's craving?
I liked that you mentionned Hermia, in order to highlight the contrast between his engagement to Helena (who loves him) and Hermia who doesn't. The exclamation mark shows his exasperation. Well done !
HELENA: We cannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS : Men goes as women comes for love is unfair What fate desired can not be alter
HELENA: We cannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS: Yet women wooing men is not forbidden, If you would but woo one who would listen!
HELENA : Wecannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS : I'd choose you to decamp this awful place Than have to meet thy monstrous ghastly place.
HELENA: We cannot fight for love, as men may do; We should be wooed, and were not made to woo. DEMETRIUS: To fight for you? Don't ask this much of me; There is another heart I'm drawn to see.
I really love your couplet Tom, mostly because you put a question and it reveals the ironic tone of Demetrius. Thus, you develop even more his character and the way you describe him as almost disgusted made me laugh! ;)
HELENA : We cannot fight for love as men may do We should be wooed and were not made to woo DEMETRIUS : Thus don’t counter your nature in vain Flee from my sight, blood’s boiling in my vein
HELENA We cannot fight for love, as men may do; We should be wooed, and were not made to woo. DEMETRIUS Then woo me not! Now stay, or thou shalt see: This devil's hand holds nought but hell for thee. [Exit] HELENA I'll follow thee, and make a heaven of a hell, To die upon the hand I love so well. [Exit]
